Seattle Public Library

Designed as a joint project between LMN Architects and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (including Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Prince-Ramus), the faceted shape of Seattle’s Central Library is an innovative architectural response to the required functions of the library. The building’s very innovation and lack of convention also create findability challenges.

Wayworks was retained by the library to improve the overall experience of the building by designing a wayfinding signage system. The new signage system is designed to integrate with the existing identification signs and complement the architecture.

The photo above shows a free-standing directional sign on level 5. These blue pylons were designed to create a bold presence with their size and color, let visitors know where they are, and alert them to navigational decision points.
